Only five of the 258 things D Spot Dessert Cafe sells cost less than $5, and every one of them is a plain coffee or a plain tea. Everything else on the menu — 253 items with an average price of $17.13 — is priced the way a restaurant prices a main course, because that is what a plated dessert here is.

The clearest signal is how many sections carry one number for every item in them. All nine of Dspot's Originals are $25.99. All eleven Chocolate Bar Milkshakes — Bounty, Skor, Kinder Bueno, Ferrero Rocher, Kit Kat and the rest — are $13.49, so the chocolate bar you pick is a flavour choice and nothing more. The four Croffles are all $18.99, the three Skillet Cookies all $19.99, and all six Iced Coffees are $7.99. Funnel Cakes are $24.99 across fourteen builds, with a single exception: a Plain Funnel Cake at $15.99, which is the $9 you save by ordering no toppings.

Cake is sold three ways, at three prices

The Cakes section runs 29 lines but only two prices, and the difference between them is ice cream. A slice served with it — New York Style, Red Velvet, Tiramisu Cheesecake, Chocolate Lava, the Lotus and Pistachio milkcakes — is $19.99. The same slice listed as "Only", meaning the cake on its own, is $13.50. That $6.49 gap is the scoop.

Then there is the third way. Nine Whole Cakes sit at the very top of the menu: $95.00 for a whole Strawberry Shortcake, Chocolate Cake, Carrot Cake or Red Velvet Cake, and $105.00 for the cheesecakes — Hazelnut, Red Velvet, Oreo, Chocolate — with the whole New York Style at $100.00. Those nine items are the reason this menu's ceiling is three times higher than most dessert lists.

The widest section, and the drinks

Signature Belgian Creations is the only place where prices really move within a section: $22.99 for Chill To The Cone at one end, $36.99 for Hit D Spot at the other, with Cookilicious at $31.99 in between. Seven items, a $14 spread.

Drinks are priced as dessert too. A Belgian hot chocolate in dark, milk or white is $8.99 against $7.99 for the Classic, the mojitos are $9.49 across all five flavours, and smoothies and Italian sodas land between $6.99 and $8.99. Coffee at $4.99 and Reg Tea at $4.49 are the two cheapest things in the building.

Where the volume is

Scooped Ice Cream is the single largest section at 48 items, priced $8.49 to $10.99, and the 40 Twisted Tornadoes run $11.99 to $13.49. Between those two and the 27 Signature Shakes at $11.99 to $12.99, well over a third of the menu is frozen and sits in a narrow band under $14. The Mains section is genuinely four items — a plain crepe at $11.99, a plain waffle at $12.99, and build-your-own versions at $17.99 and $18.49 — and the Vegan Menu is five, from an $8.49 small Dark Choco to the $18.99 Simply Perfect Croffle it shares with the Croffles list.

Do prices vary across Canada?

D Spot operates as a franchise, so the price of a funnel cake in one location will not always match the next; dessert cafes also tend to adjust plate prices more often than fast-food chains do. Everything here is quoted before tax, which varies by province. What travels reliably from store to store is the internal logic — the $6.49 difference between a slice with ice cream and a slice without, and the flat pricing within a section — even when the base figure has moved.
