Scrambles Menu With Prices in Canada

Scrambles is a single breakfast-and-lunch room in Ajax, Ontario, and its menu behaves like an independent diner rather than a chain: 102 items, an average price of $7.94, and an eggs benedict list where four of the five versions are sold in a half size at a separate price.

That half-size pricing is the most idiosyncratic thing on the menu, and the discounts are not uniform. Eggs Benedict is $12.95 full and $11.00 half — $1.95 off. With bacon, sausage or ham it is $11.95 and $10.00, again $1.95. Smoked Salmon Benedict is $15.95 and $13.95, a $2.00 gap, and Veggie Eggs Benedict $10.95 and $8.95, also $2.00. The fifth, Schnitzel Benedict at $14.95, has no half version at all. If you are ordering for two, two halves cost more than one full plate every time.

Omelettes and the cost of a topping

Four Egg Omelettes has eleven entries, but only eight are omelettes; the other three are the add-on prices, listed as menu items in their own right. A veggie topping is $0.99, any meat topping or cheese is $1.99, and switching to egg white is $1.79. The omelettes themselves come in two bands: Western and Cheddar Cheese at $10.95, Vegetable and Spanish at $11.50, and then Greek, Butcher's Favourite, Great Canadian and Florentine all at $12.95.

The Great Canadian is peameal bacon, onion, mushroom and cheese — and peameal recurs as the marker of the more expensive option throughout the menu. In All Day Breakfast, three eggs with bacon or sausage is $8.50 but three eggs with peameal bacon is $9.25. In Side Order, bacon, sausage, turkey bacon or ham is $3.95 while peameal bacon, farmer sausage, crab cake or corned beef hash is $5.50.

The cheapest full breakfast

Three eggs with toast, home fries and beans is $5.50, the lowest-priced complete plate in the house and the same money as any of the five items on the Kids Menu, which are all $5.95. Below that, the price list runs down through single sides: fried onions or mushrooms at $0.50 — the cheapest item on the menu — baked beans and gravy or salsa at $1.50, eggs at $1.45, and Texas toast or an English muffin at $1.95. Coffee or tea is also $1.95, and a bottle of water $1.45.

Thirty-one of the 102 items are under $5 and 68 under $10, which is what an average of $7.94 looks like in practice on a menu whose ceiling is a New York Steak with three eggs at $16.95 — the only item above $16 anywhere.

Pancakes, french toast and the halving pattern again

Signature Pancakes and Cinnamon French Toast both price a single piece at $3.95 and a full order at roughly double: three pieces of french toast is $8.45, pancakes with chocolate chips or blueberries $7.45, and with cranberries $8.45. Lunch Wrap & Sandwich is the busiest lunch section at twelve items, nearly all between $9.95 and $12.95, with the burger names doing the differentiating — Canuck, Banquet, Hot Hamburger, Live Hamburger — rather than the prices, which repeat $11.95 five times.

Do prices vary across Canada?

Scrambles is one independent restaurant rather than a chain, which means there is no second location to compare against and no head office setting a national board — the owner prices the menu directly and can revise it whenever costs move. Ontario HST is added at the till. Because there is only one kitchen behind these numbers, treat them as a snapshot of one room's pricing rather than a regional benchmark.
