Forty-seven of the 114 things Bâton Rouge lists are drinks, and 36 of those are wine. The Red Wine section alone carries 23 entries and runs from a $33.00 organic Montepulciano to a $135.00 Barolo — a wider range than the entire food menu manages.
Read the food side and one thing is immediately obvious: almost nothing has cents attached. Appetizers, salads, burgers, ribs, steaks, seafood, family meals, kids' plates and desserts are all whole-dollar figures. Cents appear in exactly two places — the seven Extras, at $4.25 or $5.25, and bottled soft drinks at $3.50.
The steak list is six lines long
Premium Steaks is a deliberately short section: Top Sirloin 8oz at $32.00, Chimichurri Bavette at $36.00, New York Striploin 12oz at $45.00, Filet Mignon 7oz at $47.00, Ribeye 14oz at $51.00 and Rib Steak 16oz at $55.00. That is the whole beef offering, and it is priced roughly by weight rather than by cut prestige — the two largest steaks are the two most expensive.
Signature Ribs sits below it, from $29.00 for BBQ Ribs to $46.00 when they arrive with jumbo black tiger shrimp, with a rack and a half at $37.00. Fish and Seafood is four plates: Grilled Mediterranean Sea Bass $30.00, Atlantic Salmon $33.00, Black Cod $35.00 and a full-portion Tuna Tartare $36.00.
Where the smaller numbers are
Only 21 items come in under ten dollars, and the Extras section supplies a third of them. Coleslaw, Red Skin Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Wild Rice Pilaf and Signature French Fries are $4.25 each; the Fully Loaded Baked Potato, Sweet Potato Fries with Chipotle Mayonnaise and Seasonal Vegetables are $5.25. The Kids section is five plates between $10.00 and $13.00, with Rosée Pasta at the bottom and BBQ Ribs and BBQ Chicken Breast at $13.00.
Family Meal is a five-line section built for a table: the Family Chicken Tenders Bundle at $64.00, the Family Burger Bundle at $69.00, Family Ribs Fest at $89.00, and both the Meat Lover and the Ribs and Chicken Tenders bundle at $129.00.
The appetizer split
Thirteen appetizers cover an unusually wide range for a single section. A Creamy Potato Soup is $8.00 and a Caesar or Mixed Salad appetizer is $9.00; from there it climbs through Garlic Bread Au Gratin at $12.00, Cauliflower Wings at $13.00, five Tempura Shrimp at $14.00, Spinach Dip at $16.00, Calamari and Lobster-Stuffed Mushrooms at $17.00, Grilled Octopus at $21.00 and Steak Tartare at $25.00. A Grilled Octopus To Share is $39.00 — more than the cheapest steak.
Do prices vary across Canada?
Bâton Rouge operates across Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes, and a full-service steakhouse prices to its market — the same 12oz striploin can carry a different number in downtown Montreal than in a suburban location, and wine lists in particular are set restaurant by restaurant. Everything shown excludes taxes, and dining in means a gratuity on top. Use the list for the relative picture — how far a rack of ribs sits below a ribeye, and how quickly the wine column overtakes the food column.
