Karma's Cafe is one of the few restaurants where you can read the bill before it arrives. All 27 items are priced in whole dollars — $14, $15, $18, $20, $21, $25, $26, $40 — with no cents anywhere, and nothing at all below $14.
The kitchen is Thai and Tibetan rather than the coffee-shop menu the name suggests. Noodle dishes, curries, rice plates, momos and two soups make up the whole list, and the single most useful thing to know about the pricing is the tofu rule.
Six dishes are sold twice, once with chicken, shrimp or beef and once with tofu, and the tofu version is exactly $4 cheaper every time. Phad Thai, Bami Goreng, Noodles With Lime Leaves, Thai Basil Noodles, Nasi Goreng and Biryani are all $25 with meat or seafood and $21 with tofu. Karma's Curry follows the same split. The one dish that breaks it is the Thai Green Curry, $26 with chicken, shrimp or beef but still $21 with tofu — a $5 gap rather than $4, and the only meat main priced above $25.
Two rice dishes have no vegetarian twin and no discount: Tibetan Beef Fingsha and Chicken Satay, both $25.
Appetizers carry the whole cheap end
Every item under $20 on this menu is an appetizer. Rice Patties, listed by their Dutch name Nasi-Hapjes, and Salad Rolls are $14. Thai Spring Rolls, Tibetan Momos and Shrimp Wraps are $15. A Grilled Shrimp Salad is $18. Then the section jumps: Karma's Platter is $40, the highest price on the menu and $15 more than any main course.
Soups are the shortest section — a Tum Yam Soup at $20, and a Pho Bo listed without a price.
With a 27-item menu and an average around $22, there is no value tier here in the fast-food sense. The cheapest way to eat is two $14 appetizers; the cheapest full plate is any of the seven tofu dishes at $21.
Do prices vary across Canada?
Karma's Cafe is a single independent restaurant rather than a chain, so there is no second location to compare against — but an independent kitchen can reprice a menu whenever it likes, and small menus like this one change more freely than a corporate board does. Delivery-platform listings usually add a markup over the in-house price. Tax is extra.
