Twenty-one sections is a lot for 167 items, and Pickle Barrel gets there by running several restaurants at once: a Jewish-style deli counter, a brunch room, a full plant-based kitchen, and a bar list with its own wine, beer, seltzer and spirits shelves.
The deli is the part that behaves least like a restaurant menu. Take Out Specials sells meat by weight and by pack, and the meat you choose makes no difference to the price: smoked meat, pastrami, corned beef, roast beef and roast turkey are all $19.99 for a pound and all $24.99 as a Deli Family Pack. A half loaf of rye is $3.00 and large coleslaw is $5.99, which is how a section of takeaway trays ends up holding some of the cheapest rows on the page.
Sit-down prices are considerably higher. The average across the whole menu is $14.28, but only 70 of 167 items fall under $10 and a lot of those are drinks and side orders. Sandwiches & Deli runs $15.99 for a Triple Decker Grilled Cheese to $24.99 for The Big Smoke; Pastas start at $20.99 and finish at $29.99 for Lobster & Shrimp Linguine, the priciest dish on the menu; six Burgers occupy a narrow $17.99 to $19.99.
Two sections priced at a single number
The Kids Menu is $9.99 for eight of its nine dishes — pasta, fish and chips, chicken fingers, grilled cheese, spaghetti, burger, veggie burger, superfood bowl — with only Kids' Grilled Salmon breaking rank at $13.99. Desserts does the same thing at the same figure: nine of eleven items are $9.99, including four 500 ml tubs of Ben & Jerry's, with Cotton Candy at $5.00 the only cheap way out.
The plant-based list is a re-index, not a surcharge
Sixteen Plant-Based rows mostly restate dishes that appear elsewhere, and they restate the prices exactly. Vegan Buddha Bowl is $21.99 and so is Buddha Bowl; Vegan Kung Pao and Kung Pao are both $22.49; Vegan Big Life Plant Burger matches the $17.99 Big Life Plant Burger. Choosing the vegan version of something on this menu does not cost extra.
Portion size does move money, though, and the Small Plates and Salads & Bowls sections are the same dishes at two scales: a small Signature Greek Salad is $9.99 against $17.99 large, a small Caesar $8.49 against $15.99, a small House Salad $8.49 against $14.99.
The bar shelves are priced like a bottle shop rather than a bar. Beer tins run $4.25 to $5.00 singly and $24.00 for a six-pack; 750 ml bottles of wine are $17.00 to $20.00; spirits come in 200 ml at $14.00 and 375 ml at $20.00. Non-alcoholic pop is $1.80 a can, the cheapest row on the entire menu.
Do prices vary across Canada?
Pickle Barrel is an Ontario-based operation, and its dining-room, takeout and delivery menus do not always carry the same numbers — the takeaway deli packs in particular are priced as a separate offer. Prices exclude Ontario HST, and licensed items can shift when provincial liquor pricing moves. Where a dish appears in two sections at two sizes, the gap between them is the more reliable figure to plan around.
